GALLIPOLIS — When Zach Loveday transferred to Huntington Prep, the 7-foot-1 center left a big hole in the Gallipolis lineup.
The Blue Devils have been filling that hole quite nicely.
Gallipolis had three players in double figures as they beat the Chesapeake Panthers 68-57 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
Cory Calls scored 23 points to lead the Blue Devils (7-4, 5-2) who remained tied in the league with Ironton and Coal Grove for second place.
Caleb Henry and Justin McClelland scored 15 points each for the Blue Devils.
Chesapeake (8-5, 2-5) had three players in double figures led by Eli Archer with 19. Austin Jackson and Tylan Hutchison added 11 points each.
Gallipolis was up 17-13 at the end of the first quarter as Henry scored nine points including a 3-pointer.
Logan Walsh had a 3-pointer and Travis Grim got four points as five different players scored in the quarter for the Panthers.
Hutchison had five points including a trey but the Blue Devils erupted for 24 points as Call hit two 3-pointers and score 14 points. Blaine Carter added five points.
The Panthers cut the deficit to 51-39 after three quarters as Archer hit a pair of trifectas and score eight points. McClelland had two triples for Gallipolis.
Chesapeake outscored Gallipolis 18-17 in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough to overcome the 14-point deficit.
Jackson hit a 3-pointer and scored nine points with Archer scored six more. Gallipolis converted 11-of-17 foul shots in the quarter.
On Tuesday, Chesapeake visits South Point and Gallipolis goes to Rock Hill.
