Lady Pirates get past Lady Dragons in overtime, 55-45

WAVERLY — When the offense goes cold for the Fairland Lady Dragons, it goes stone cold.
The Lady Dragons lost their offensive touch in the second quarter and overtime as they fell 55-45 to the Wheelersburg Lady Pirates in the Division III district semifinals Saturday at Waverly’s downtown arena.
Fairland managed just four points in the second quarter and failed to score in overtime.
A 3-pointer by Britney Thompson and a basket by Kelsie Warnock gave Fairland a 12-2 lead to start the game.
Kaylee Darnell hit a 3-pointer and a basket to get Wheelersburg within 12-7 before Harley Lyons’ 3-pointer and Thompson’s basket with 1:02 left in the first quarter made it 17-12.
Darnell and Alaina Keeney hit baskets to give the Lady Pirates their first lead at 22-21 with 2:24 left in the half. Abbie Kallner then score with 46 seconds on the clock and it was 24-21 at the half.
Lyons’ trifecta less than a minute into the second half tied the game. The Lady Pirates’ Karlie Estep scored but Warnock’s triple put Fairland back in front.
Ellie Kallner’s 3-pointer tied the game but Emma Marshall hit a trey as Fairland took a 34-31 lead.
Jenna Stone’s triple put the lead at 37-31 only to have Abbie Kallner score and Darnell sink a foul shot and it was 37-34 at the end of the quarter.
Darnell scored at the 6:46 mark to put the Lady Pirates up 39-37 and they held the lead until a basket by Lyons tied the game at 45 with 1:32 left in regulation and force overtime.
Darnell hit a 3-pointer 30 seconds into the overtime and the Lady Pirates had the lead for good. She then converted 3-of-4 free throws and it was 51-45 with 1:46 to go.
Fairland not only failed to score in overtime but went 0-for-3 at the foul line.
For the game, Wheelersburg made 9-of-18 free throw attempts and Fairland was just 3-of-11.
Lyons scored 16 points for Fairland with Thompson scoring eight. Warnock had 11 rebounds and three assists while Allie Marshall got 10 rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Darnell had a game-high 23 points, Abbie Kallner 11 and Ellie Kallner 10 to pace the Lady Pirates. Darnell also had 11 rebounds and three steals.
The Lady Pirates play Eastern Brown next Saturday at 3:30 in the district finals.
