Students collect 2,211 food items during drive

DEERING — Recently, students at Dawson-Bryant Elementary have been collecting items to help those who may not be as fortunate.

The school has undertaken a drive for the Backpack Buddies campaign and students from all classes brought in food items for the effort.

Altogether, the school collected 2,211 items over the drive.

On Friday, Ironton Fire Chief Mike Mahlmeister paid a visit to the first grade class room of Mrs. Myers and told them that, as a result of leading the school in collections, the students were to be rewarded with a pizza party.

Myers’ class of 19 students brought in 988 items, accounting for nearly half of the school’s total.

Backpack Buddies, based in Ironton, is organized by Campbell Chapel Freewill Baptist Church and distributes food to needy families throughout Lawrence County.

The ready-to-eat food items are placed in the backpacks of students on Friday to take home, ensuring that they will have access to food on the weekends.
