FAYETTE TOWNSHIP — Since January, the Fayette Township Trustees have been collecting scrap tires from the side of township roads as well as cleaning up open dumps of scrap tires.

Trustee Mike Finley led the cleanup and was instrumental in applying for Ohio EPA’s state-funded scrap tire cleanup program. To qualify for the program, the collection must contain at least 100 but no more than 5,000 scrap tires. Fayette Township cleanup amounted to over 1,400 tires.

Tires are a nuisance and public safety concern, since they can serve as a breeding ground for disease-carrying mosquitoes.

This scrap tire remediation program can assist county and local governmental entities by using state contractors to remove and dispose of open dumped tires, as in this case of Fayette Township. The program was done at no cost to the county or township.
