An Ashland, Ky., scrap metal business wants some financial help for a new venture planned on the Ohio River in the western end of Lawrence County.

Representatives of BF Iron asked commissioners if there was a possibility for stimulus money for their plan to put a barge repair and scrap facility near Haverhill. The business could potentially hire at least 50 workers including welders, grinders and equipment operators.

“If we can’t repair it, we will put it into barges (scrapped),” Bob Fowler of BF Iron told the commission at its regular Thursday meeting. “The material will go back on the barges and be shipped out.”

Commissioner Jason Stephens asked for a schematic of the operation to determine its proximity to any residential area nearby.

Commissioners also heard from County Treasurer Stephen Burcham that the county pulled in almost $94,000 from last month’s tax lien sale, the first ever conducted in the county.

In that sale 40 delinquent parcels changed hands. Burcham plans a second sale Monday, Oct. 25 at 10 a.m. of about 400 parcels with $2 million in back taxes.

“Hopefully, it will be as successful,” he said.

Those wishing to participate in this sale must register beforehand starting Sept. 20 at the treasurer’s office and make a cash down payment of $500.

Owners of those parcels can still come into the treasurer’s office to set up a payment plan to discharge back taxes before the liens on the properties go on the auction block.

In other business the commission:

Received a letter from Chesapeake Mayor Dick Gilpin asking for help to fund the North Huntington Heights road repair project. That project is expected to cost $461,000. The village already has a $415,000 grant but must come up with about $46,000.

Received the weekly dog warden’s report stating 22 animals were destroyed, seven sold and one redeemed.

Received a request from Bobby Bentley to establish Private Road 2560 as a township road.
