The St. Joseph Flyers’ offense wasn’t running well, so they were forced to pop the clutch.

The Flyers used clutch hitting and the relief pitching of Tanner Riley to beat the Harves Christian Warriors 8-6 on Monday.

“We couldn’t put anything together consistently, but we got some clutch hits. We need to be more patient at the plate,” said Flyers’ coach Greg Bryant.

“Tanner did a good job coming in and holding them in check.”

St. Joseph took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a double by Payton Blair and Chad Harvey’s base hit.

The Warriors got two runs in the third inning — one unearned — to lead 2-1 and they added a run in the fourth.

But the Flyers got two runs in the fifth to tie the game.

With two outs, Levi Hopkins walked and Blair had an RBI double. Harvey then singled to drive in Blair.

Harvest got three runs in the sixth to lead 6-3, but again the Flyers answered as they scored five times in the bottom of the inning.

Pat Gagai walked, moved up on a wild pitch and T.J. Young had a run-scoring hit. Young went to third on an outfield error.

Joseph Unger walked, stole second, Hopkins was hit by a pitch and Blair was safe on an error for a run. Harvey then unloaded a three-run double.

Harvey went 3-3 with a double and a triple while Blair was 2-4 with two doubles.

St. Joseph (12-0) plays at River Valley on Tuesday.
