They will walk for awareness.

Members of several area organizations will have a Walk for Autism Saturday at the Ironton High School track.

April is National Autism Awareness Month. Bianca Sexton, executive communication director for the Necco Center in South Point, said the idea is to educate the public about what autism is and how it affects those with the disorder as well as their family.

“We (at Necco) have come across people who have little awareness of what autism is and what it can do to children,” Sexton said. “This is kind of a grass-roots thing.”

Sexton said the walk on Saturday is also meant to bring together families coping with autism for mutual support.

Along with Necco, the event is being organized by the Lawrence County Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism Group and the I Believe Foundation of Ashland, Ky. The Lawrence County Commissioners have been asked to make a special declaration in support of the event when they meet this week.

The event is free and open to the public. There is no fee to walk. The hours will be 1-3 p.m.
