“It’s a pilgrimage,” the Rev. Steve Harvey, pastor of Sharon Baptist Church explained as a group of his parishioners made their way down South Fifth Street from the church to Woodland Cemetery.

Heading the group were parishioners carrying a large wooden cross. Each Good Friday, members of the church express their faith in a very public way — with a cross walk.

“It’s a pilgrimage of humility to replicate what Jesus did for us.”

Parishioners at Sharon Baptist Church gathered Thursday for communion and then for the cross walk Friday.

Harvey said he hopes the starkness of the cross being pulled through the streets and the silence of the accompanying crowd will cause people to remember not only the excitement of Easter Sunday but the events that led to it.

“I don’t want them to lose the message of Good Friday and what Christ did for you,” Harvey said. “Easter is exciting, but look what he did for you on Friday.”
