Local WesBanco employees honored

IRONTON — WesBanco, Inc., headquartered in Wheeling, West Virginia, recently announced its 2008 President’s Club Award winners.

Each year, the bank recognizes its top performers. This year, 24 employees received the distinction for their excellent performance, ranking in the top 2 percent of the corporation.

Among the winners, three local bankers received the award.

Mary Cronacher is the Banking Center Manager at the Ironton office. Pam Shaw is the Banking Center Manager at the Portsmouth office. Dan Mooney is a Regional Vice President in the Corporate Banking Division and a commercial lender serving Lawrence and Scioto Counties and the Tri-State.

Patrol’s auxiliary includes local man

SOUTH POINT — The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Auxiliary program, which provides assistance to troopers in the course of their duties, appointed 15 new unpaid volunteers at a ceremony held today at the Patrol’s TrainingAcademy.

Dwayne E. Hall Jr. of South Point will be stationed at the Ironton Post that is actually located in South Point.

The Auxiliary graduates went through eight days of law enforcement training, which included firearm familiarization, traffic and criminal laws, self-defense, cultural sensitivity and assisting in crash investigation. These unarmed volunteers will assist troopers at crash scenes and traffic stops, traffic control, disaster relief, and special detail support.

The Patrol Auxiliary was formed in 1942 with members contributing thousands of hours a year in an assortment of functions. Each member is required to volunteer a minimum of 120 hours per year to remain active.

Each of the Auxiliary members will volunteer at posts in their home area. The new Auxiliary members will be assisting 10 of the Patrol’s 55 posts.

Huntington Mission needs Easter help

Huntington, W.Va. — On Easter Sunday, the Huntington City Mission will be serving: baked ham, creamy mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, deviled eggs, hot rolls and a variety of desserts from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.

BCPL set to host Community Fair

ASHLAND, Ky. — Connecting community groups with local people looking to become involved is the goal of Boyd County Public Library’s third Community Fair on Saturday, April 11.

Twenty-five local groups and organizations have signed up to have information tables at the fair, giving community residents a great chance to see what the area has to offer. People can find information on art programs, health advocacy, legal aid, food recovery and many community service opportunities.

The Community Fair runs from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Main Branch, 1740 Central Ave. It kicks off National Library Week 2009, which has the theme “Worlds Connect @ Your Library.”

Boyd County Public Library Friends will hold a bake sale, Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital will provide free health screenings and King’s Daughters Medical Center will have a kids corner.

There will also be a special preview of the library’s Art Auction, which takes place April 18. All the items in the library’s collection will be up for sale, with the proceeds going to fund the “Be Creative” Summer Reading program.

“The Community Fair is a chance for the public to see what their community has to offer,” explained Director Debbie Cosper. “Sometimes it’s hard to find that particular group or program that you are interested in, and it’s hard for groups to find new members. So, we bring both sides together for an educational and fun afternoon.”

SOMC focuses on community health

PORTSMOUTH – A series of programs designed to educate community members on health issues will kick off with a daylong event Saturday, April 11, at the 14th Street Community Center.

Saturday’s free event is the first of three in the Community Pulling Together For Health program. During the week of April 13-17, Working It Out Military style, an exercise program, will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the community center. On April 24 from 6-8 p.m. a skit for seniors titled “I Am Not Old…I Am Just Getting Better” will be performed.

The April 11 event begins at 9 a.m. with a men’s prayer breakfast. Pastor David Malone from Kingdom Builders Church will speak about Nurturing Spiritual Health. At 10 a.m. free health screenings begin and continental breakfast will be available.

Southern Ohio Medical Center (SOMC) will provide free cardiac risk screenings all the day. Representatives from several local agencies will be available throughout the day to provide health and community information.

From 10 to 11:30 a.m., local physicians and other medical professionals will be on hand for the Ask the Doctor session. They will discuss health issues affecting the African American family.

Also at 10 a.m., Dr. George Pettit, an obstetrician and gynecologist at SOMC, will discuss cervical cancer and human papilloma virus, a virus that infects human skin and mucus membranes.
