WILLOW WOOD — Symmes Valley Vikings’ head coach Rusty Webb knows what to expect from the Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans Bishops.

Everything.

Webb said the Bishops are capable of playing any style of offense and that’s what the Vikings defense will see when they travel to Maysville High School on Friday to play Rosecran in the Division VI Region 23 quarterfinals at 7:30 p.m.

“They’re a little like Oak Hill, maybe not as much size but more speed,” said Webb. “They are diverse like Buffalo and they are athletic like (Portsmouth) Notre Dame.

“We played those teams the last three weeks so hopefully that will get us ready. Rosecrans is very athletic and they played a tough schedule.”

The Bishops beat Danville 21-7 early in the season. Danville finished first in the Region 23 computer ratings.

And while the Bishops went 7-1 to start the season, they lost leading rusher Luke Lloyd with a broken ankle in a 6-3 loss to River View week nine. River View’s only touchdown was a 35-yard fumble return.

“They’ve played a lot of bigger schools and they’ve more than held their own. Most of the teams they’ve played are spread teams and we’re different than they’ve seen, so we hope that will work in our favor,” said Webb.

The Vikings (8-2) are a run-oriented, power offense that operates out of the wishbone formation. The backfield is a four-headed monster that features Alec Herrell, D.J. Miller, Austin Owens and quarterback Tyler Rowe.

Conversely, the Bishops are led by the versatile play of sophomore quarterback Adrick Cronin (6-1, 165) who runs and throws.

In last week’s 34-28 loss to Fort Frye, Cronin ran for 96 yards and was 14 of 20 passing for 215 yards and a pair of touchdowns, both to Thomas Thacker (5-11, 180) who caught eight passes for 143 yards.

“They’ll do the same thing they’ve been doing. They’ll spread the field use a variety of formation and attack all areas of the field. We have to count the quarterback as a runner,” said Webb.

Cronin may become an even bigger key to the offense depending on the status of running back Chase Lanning (5-11, 205) who left last week’s game in the first half with a hamstring injury and did not return.

Lanning also plays inside linebacker on defense.

“We’re going to have to play defense. We can’t come out slow. We’re going to have to play all four quarters,” said Webb.

“We want to control the ball and control the clock and limit their quarterback’s touches with the ball.”
