Lady Vikings post ‘ugly’ win over Western

WILLOW WOOD — Looks aren’t everything.

The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings picked up an ugly 56-42 win over the Latham Western Lady Indians Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

Shooting only 34 percent from the field and failing to get offensive rebounds left Lady Vikings’ coach Lisa Bryant with mixed feelings.

“This was not a pretty win, but we’ll take it,” said Bryant. “We shot 34 percent from the field, we did not rebound well or show patience on the offensive end in the first half.

“But we got it together in the second half and put together a win.”

Erica Corn scored all 8 of her points in the first quarter as the Lady Vikings took a 14-12 lead.

Kelcie Hawk and Tabby Riley had 4 points each in the second quarter as Western came back to tie the game at the half, 25-25.

But the Lady Vikings (6-7, 6-4) came to life in the second half as they committed just four turnovers after the break.

Chelsea Wall and Jessie Morris scored 8 points apiece in the third quarter as Symmes Valley took a 42-32 lead.

The Lady Vikings outscored the Lady Indians 14-10 in the fourth quarter as Kayla Hayes, Brooke Skinner and Morris scored 3 points each.

“Our kids came out more focused on both ends of the floor. They also took care of the ball,” said Bryant.

Skinner led the Lady Vikings with 16 points. Morris and Wall scored 11 each.

Wall pulled down 8 rebounds, Nikki Nance and Morris 7 each while Ada Humphrey and Skinner grabbed 5 each. Morris also had 3 assists and Wall 4 steals.

Riley scored 14 points and Sharon Kerns 12 for Western (3-12, 2-8).
