PEDRO — Like the old saying goes, age doesn’t matter.

The Rock Hill Redmen turned to their sophomores for some key plays including the game-winning hit by Jonathan Schob in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge the Chesapeake Panthers 4-3 Monday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

“The young kids came through tonight,” said Rock Hill coach Barry Litteral.

“Drew Kidd had a go-ahead double after another sophomore had a good sacrifice, and Schob had the game-winning hit. The four sophomores did well, but the whole team played well.”

The Redmen took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Josh Malone singled, stole second base, moved to third on a fly out and scored on Jeremy Blagg’s base hit.

Chesapeake tied the game in the second inning.

Les Counts singled, Colton Lindsey walked, and a throwing error on a double play attempt allowed Counts to score.

The Panthers took a 2-1 lead in the third when Jimmy Conrad tripled and Brandon Noble doubled.

The score remained 2-1 until the fifth when Rock Hill tied the game. Malone tripled to start the inning and Cody Massie had an RBI single.

Rock Hill went up 3-2 in the sixth on a walk to Devin Darby, a sacrifice by Matt Jenkins and a run-scoring double by Kidd.

Each team scored in the seventh.

Chesapeake tied the game on a one-out single by Jarred Brown, a sacrifice by Noble and an RBI single by Bare.

But the Redmen answered as Blagg tripled to lead off the inning and Schob had a one-out single.

Sophomore Jared Bruce worked the seventh inning to get the win in relief of Devin Darby.

“I was impressed with the way Darby threw the ball. He kept them off-balance,” said Litteral.

Blagg was 3-4 and Malone 2-3 as Rock Hill had eight hits.

Rock Hill (3-1, 1-0) hosts Coal Grove at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
