PORTSMOUTH — The extra work paid off for the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers.

Playing a doubleheader, the Lady Tigers picked up two wins as they beat the Green Lady Bobcats 16-1 in five innings and edged the Portsmouth Lady Trojans 6-5.

“Today was our best team effort year. Our defense worked hard and made some good plays,” said Ironton coach Missy Fields.

“I am very proud of the team effort we saw today. It excites me to see them finally believing in themselves and each other.”

Ironton (3-5) had nine hits in the first game led by Laken White who went 2-4 with a double.

Aley Carmon — who went 1-2 at the plate with a double — got the win as she allowed just one hit. She struck out one and did not issue a walk.

In the second game, Ironton used a big six-run fifth inning to take a 6-1 lead and held off a Portsmouth comeback big in the sixth to win.

Erin Wetzel went 5.1 innings to get the win and Carmon finished up for the save.

Saige Fields and Carmon went 2-4 to pace the offense.

Gabby Guthrie and Peighton Williams hit home runs for Portsmouth.

Coach Fields said a key play came early when Ariel Whitt threw out a Portsmouth runner trying to stretch a double into a triple.

The relay throw went from Taylor Monk to Whitt to White.

“Ariel Whitt played her best game yet. She made a throw right on the money. That play gave us a spark that we need to gain some momentum,” said coach Fields.

“We didn’t give up in the sixth when Guthrie and Williams hit back-to-back home runs. Wetzel pitched a great game, but they started to get to her in the sixth and Aley Carmon came in and struck three of the next four batters to help us get the win.”

Ironton visits Chesapeake on Tuesday.
