SOUTH POINT — The Portsmouth Lady Trojans knew they might have trouble scoring this season.
The South Point Lady Pointers’ defense didn’t help matters.
The Lady Pointers played shut down defense as they beat the Lady Trojans 62-23 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.
Emilee Cary knocked down 5-of-10 from 3-point range and scored 20 points to lead the Lady Pointers to a win in their opener.
Emilee Whitt had 17 points as she made 3-of-5 from behind the arc as the Lady Pointers were 9-of-20 from 3-point range. Whitt also had seven rebounds.
Maddy Khounlavong had five assists and three steals and Diamond Crawley five rebounds for South Point.
Hannah Hughes scored 10 points and Jaiden Rickett 7 for Portsmouth (2-1, 0-1).
Carey hit a 3-pointer and scored 7 points as the Lady Pointers took a 16-9 lead. Hughes scored 4 points for the Lady Trojans.
South Point outscored Portsmouth 15-3 in the second quarter to lead 31-12 at the half. Carey and Whitt combined for 13 points as each player hit a pair of 3-pointers.
Hughes had all 3 of Portsmouth’s points.
Carey made two more trifectas in the third quarter as the Lady Pointers extended the lead to 47-20.
On Thursday, South Point visits Fairland while Portsmouth host Chesapeake.
