Ward grabs 500th rebound to lead Lady Panthers’ win

CHESAPEAKE — Maddie Ward grabbed rebound No. 500 to start the game. Then she started her quest for 500 points.
Ward not only began the game by pulling down the 500th rebound of her career, she scored 23 points to lead the Chesapeake Lady Panthers a 47-41 win over the Tolsia Lady Rebels on Wednesday.
Ward led the Lady Panthers (9-8) in scoring while Blake Anderson scored 12.
Katie Marcum scored 14 points and Julie Boone 11 to pace Tolsia (6-7).
Chesapeake took an 11-10 first quarter lead as Anderson hit a 3-pointer and score 5 points and Sammie McComas getting all 4 of her points.
Boone scored 5 points for the Lady Rebels.
Taylor Hicks, Anderson and Ward all hit treys with Anderson also making 4-of-4 free throws as the Lady Panthers extended their lead to 24-18 at the half.
Marcum had half of the Lady Rebels 8 points.
Tolsia rallied to tie the game 30-30 at the end of the third quarter as Marcum scored 6 points and Kylea Pollinger hit a 3-pointer.
Ward had 4 points and Emily Duncan a basket to account for Chesapeake’s scoring in the quarter.
Kandace Pauley hit a 3-pointer but Ward had 14 points including 12-of-14 free throw attempts to give Chesapeake the win.
Tolsia was 5-of-9 at the line in the quarter.
On Thursday, Chesapeake visits Coal Grove in a league game.
