Pirates get Rodriguez

from Astros in trade

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired left-hander Wandy Rodriguez from the Houston Astros for three minor league players.

The Pirates also get cash in the trade that was announced Tuesday night after losing to the Chicago Cubs 5-1. Pittsburgh is sending left-handers Rudy Owen and Colton Cain and outfielder Robbie Grossman to Houston.

Hoping to make the playoffs for first time since 1992, Pirates general manger Neal Huntington improved one of the top pitching staffs in the National League with the acquisition of Rodriguez.

Rodriguez is 7-9 with a 3.79 ERA for Houston, the worst team in the major leagues.

 

Bosox send Lillibridge

to Tribe for De La Torre

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have acquired Brent Lillibridge from the Boston Red Sox for minor-league pitcher Jose De La Torre.

Lillibridge has played every position except pitcher and catcher. He is expected to join the Indians on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old Lillibridge has hit .212 in 295 games for Atlanta, the Chicago White Sox and Boston. He was dealt by Chicago to the Red Sox on June 24 for infielder Kevin Youkilis.

De La Torre, a right-hander, was 8-1 with a 2.91 ERA in 34 games between Triple-A Columbus and Double-A Akron.

 

Report: Bulls’ Asik

headed to Rockets

HOUSTON (AP) — Center Omer Asik is on his way to the Houston Rockets.

A person with direct knowledge of the decision says the Chicago Bulls will not match Houston’s three-year, $25 million offer sheet on Asik. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Tuesday because Chicago had not officially announced the move.

Asik averaged 3.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and one block in 66 games last season.

 

Former TCU players

placed on probabtion

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Three former TCU football players who were among more than a dozen students arrested during a drug sting have been sentenced to probation on marijuana delivery charges.

Melody McDonald, a spokeswoman for Tarrant County prosecutors, says 21-year-old D.J. Yendrey pleaded guilty last week and was sentenced to three years of probation. Yendrey, who is listed as David Yendry in court records, was fined $300 on each charge.

Tanner Brock and Tyler Horn, both 21, pleaded guilty to the same charges last month. Brock received four years’ probation and was fined $1,200. Horn was sentenced to three years’ probation and was fined $300.
