GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Four of Shawnee State’s five golfers improved their scores on Tuesday afternoon as the Bears’ golf team finished second overall at the season-opening Bluegrass Fall Classic.

The Bears cut nine strokes off Monday’s total, finishing with a 295 for the day and 601 for the tournament.

Tuesday’s team score was just five shots off the pace of Cumberland University, who won the tournament by 28 strokes. The Bears outdistanced third-place Georgetown by eight strokes.

Shawnee State’s biggest individual improvement came from freshman Corey Arthur.

He turned in the Bears’ low round of the weekend, shooting one-under-par (71) and finished the tournament at five-over-par overall, placing ninth.

Freshman Josh Zornes from Ironton was SSU’s best finisher at the tournament. A day after finishing even par, Zornes shot one-over-par (73) to finish the tournament in sixth place. He was seven shots behind eventual champion Ryan Botts of Cumberland.

As a team, Shawnee State finished with the best score on par 5’s. The Bears were a tournament-best seven-under-par combined on these holes.

In addition to a one-under score on the par 5’s, Zornes finished with an impressive even par on the par 3’s. Only two players finished with better scores on the par 3’s.

After a strong debut, the Bears will now turn their attention to the Fall Mid-South Tournament.

The fall tournament will be played at the Campbellsville Country Club. First players will tee-off at 8 a.m. Sunday. The 54-hole tournament will continue through Tuesday.
