SOUTH POINT — Angela McKeone, of South Point, is one of a kind.

She recently won the title of Mrs. Ohio All-Star.

“I recognized when I got married and had children that it’s easy to just be a wife and a mother and put yourself on the back burner,” McKeone said. “Being involved in a Mrs. Pageant allowed me to have my own voice.”

McKeone represented Ohio at Nationals in Savannah, Georgia, at the end of July.

“It was an amazing experience,” McKeone said. “I would be walking down the street and people would shout O-H! They were so excited to see me representing Ohio.”

This isn’t the only thing that makes McKeone so unique, though.

Not only is she Mrs. Ohio All-Star United States 2014, but she is also a big supporter of Autism Speaks, an autism organization that sources funding directed toward the cause and treatment of Autism spectrum disorders, raising money and awareness everywhere she goes.

“Because of my professional work, I see the need for autism understanding and research,” McKeone said.

With a master’s degree in counseling psychology, she works with elementary age children with disabilities from kindergarten through fifth grade. She also speaks at conferences and educates in the classroom.

“I provide behavioral and psychological interventions as a school-based therapist with Prestera Center in Huntington,” McKeone said. “My professional work in providing quality care is very important to me.”

When Team Up for Autism Speaks had an opening for the Walt Disney World Dopey Challenge, a 5k, 10k, half marathon and full marathon in January 2015, she jumped on the opportunity.

“This opportunity to advocate more research for autism, train for an endurance race and combine my platform for Autism research with my title of Mrs. Ohio All-Star United States 2014 was really a dream come true.”

McKeone was also selected as the 2014 Clinical Staff of the Year Award recipient from Prestera Center at the West Virginia Child Care Association’s Annual Conference.

McKeone will have a pancake breakfast from 8-10 a.m. Friday at Applebees on Third Avenue in Huntington.

Tickets for the event are $5 with all of the proceeds going to Autism Speaks.

McKeone lives in South Point with her husband, Darren, who just retired this year after 20 years of honorable service in the Marine Corps., and their two daughters Jordyn, 12, and Jocelyn, 4.
