SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Javier Baez’s tiebreaking single capped a four-run rally in the ninth inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants 6-5 on Tuesday night in Game 4 to win their NL Division Series.
Chasing their first World Series title since 1908, the Cubs will open the NL Championship Series at home Saturday against the Los Angeles Dodgers or Washington Nationals.
Held to two hits over eight innings by Matt Moore, the Cubs trailed 5-2 before coming back against a beleaguered bullpen that sabotaged San Francisco one last time.
Dodgers 6, Nationals 5
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Chase Utley singled home the tiebreaking run with two outs in the eighth inning after the Dodgers’ bullpen faltered in relief of Clayton Kershaw, and Los Angeles avoided elimination with a 6-5 victory over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday that forced a deciding Game 5 in their NL playoff.
Kenley Jansen retired the side in the ninth a day after giving up four runs in a Game 3 loss, preventing the Nationals from clinching a postseason series for the first time.
Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homer for the Dodgers, who turned to Kershaw on three days’ rest to salvage their season.
Game 5 is Thursday in Washington.
