Man pleads not guilty in Sam’s Club stabbing

A man accused of stabbing someone at the South Point Sam’s Club last month pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Judge Charles Cooper’s Lawrence County Common Pleas Court.

Shannon Mason, 32, of Ohio River Road, Lot 138, Huntington, West Virginia, pleaded not guilty to felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and theft, a first-degree misdemeanor.

According to court documents, witnesses at the scene claimed the victim tried to stop Mason when they heard that a shoplifter had run out of the store carrying a backpack. When confronted, Mason pulled a knife out and stabbed the victim in the arm before fleeing the scene.

Arresting Mason, who was located on a road near the store, was the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and the South Point Police Department.

Judge Charles Cooper set bond at $50,000 cash or surety, and pretrial was set for Oct. 18.

In an unrelated case, Preston Curry, 41, of 1173 County Road 1, Lot 59, South Point, previously pleaded guilty to three counts of trafficking in drugs (cocaine), two fifth-degree felonies and one of the fourth degree. In another case against Curry, he also pleaded guilty to another drug charge.

Judge Cooper sentenced him to 17 months in prison on two counts in the first case to run concurrent, and seven months in prison on the other two counts in the first case to run concurrent for a total of two years in prison. On Curry’s separate drug charge, Cooper sentenced him to 12 months in prison to run consecutively with his first sentencing for a total of three years in prison.

In other cases:

• Keturah Adkins, 34, of 1028 Township Road 107, Scottown, pleaded not guilty to possession of drugs (heroin), a felony of the fifth-degree. Judge Cooper set bond at $150,000 cash or surety. Pretrial was set for Oct. 18.

• Brian Blake, 29, of 27657 E. Lynn Road, Wayne, West Virginia, pleaded not guilty to four counts of burglary, all felonies of the second-degree. Judge Cooper set bond at $100,000 cash or surety. Pretrial was set for Oct. 18.

• Justin Casey, 27, of 124 Private Drive 910, State Route 522, Pedro, pleaded guilty to felonious assault, a second-degree felony. In exchange for a guilty plea, the state nolled another charge of second-degree endangering children. Judge Cooper sentenced him to four years and 11 months in prison.

• Nathaniel Marshall, 22, of 193 Township Road 208, Ironton, pleaded guilty to possession of drugs (heroin), a fifth-degree felony. Judge Cooper sentenced him to six months in prison.

• Andrew Clayton Pate, 34, of 421 Private Drive 1385, Ironton, pleaded not guilty to intimidation, a third-degree felony, assault on a peace officer, a fourth-degree felony, and harassment by an inmate, a felony of the fifth-degree. Judge Cooper set bond at $50,000 cash or surety. Pretrial was set for Oct. 18.

• Timothy Powell, 47, of 227 County Road 407, South Point, was found competent to stand trial following an evaluation. He is facing possession of a controlled substance, a fifth-degree felony, attempted burglary, a third-degree felony, and breaking and entering, a felony of the fifth-degree. Powell also denied community-controlled sanctions (CCS) violations in a separate case. Judge Cooper set trial for Oct. 18.

• Jerry Stapleton, 37, of 2534 S. Seventh Street, Ironton, pleaded not guilty to failure to comply with order or signal of a police officer, a third-degree felony, and possession of drugs (methamphetamine), a felony of the fifth-degree. Judge Cooper set bond at $25,000 cash or surety. Pretrial was set for two weeks.

• Joseph Swanson, 45, of 3877 16th Street, Huntington, West Virginia, admitted CCS violations. Judge Cooper sentenced him to nine months in prison.

• Jeremy Mays, 29, of 446 Township Road 332, Ironton, pleaded not guilty to two counts of trafficking in drugs (Oxycodone), both fourth-degree felonies, and one count of trafficking in drugs (Oxycodone), a third-degree felony. Judge Cooper set bond at $25,000 OR and ordered him to be placed on GPS monitoring.

• Michelle Brammer, 25, of 136 Private Drive 291, Ironton, pleaded guilty to violating a protection order or consent agreement, a fifth-degree felony. She was eligible for intervention in lieu of conviction, and Judge Andy Ballard ordered her to complete inpatient treatment at Mended Reeds and 200 hours community service.

• Paul Brown, 41, of 92 Township Road 1018, South Point, pleaded guilty to complicity to trafficking in heroin, a felony of the fifth-degree. Judge Ballard sentenced him to six months in prison.

• Courtney Gallion, 38, of 411 N. Sixth Street, Ironton, admitted CCS violations. Judge Ballard ordered her to complete STAR with 17 months reserved.

• Edward Holmes, 39, of 711 Orchard Street, Ironton, admitted CCS violations. Judge Ballard continued CCS under intensive supervised probation (ISP) with 184 days reserved, and ordered him to complete STAR.

• Jordin Perry, 24, of 3868 State Route 141, Ironton, admitted CCS violations. Judge Ballard sentenced her to four years CCS with 35 months reserved, and ordered her to complete the STAR relapse program and treatment at Mended Reeds at the conclusion of STAR.

• Charles Schob II, 38, of 2543 S. Fifth Street, Ironton, pleaded guilty to trafficking in heroin and complicity to trafficking in heroin, both fourth-degree felonies. Judge Ballard set bond at $50,000 OR and ordered him to be placed on GPS monitoring until his sentencing date in two weeks.

• Michael Schumann, 31, of 284 State Route 207, Lot 5, Chillicothe, pleaded not guilty to burglary, a fourth-degree felony. Judge Ballard set bond at $50,000 cash or surety and $25,000 OR.

• Brenna Shavor, age and address unknown, denied CCS violations. Judge Ballard set sentencing for Oct. 4.

• Nina Swartzmiller, 26, of 810 S. 10th Street, Ironton, pleaded guilty to burglary, a felony of the fourth-degree. Judge Ballard sentenced her to four years CCS under ISP with 17 months reserved, and ordered her to complete 200 hours community service as well as pay court costs.

• Nathaniel Walsh, 33, previously pleaded guilty to three counts of trafficking in heroin, fifth-degree felonies. Judge Ballard set bond at $250,000 cash or surety and $100,000 OR.

• Stephanie Ward, 35, of 2001 Liberty Ave., Ironton, pleaded not guilty to burglary, a second-degree felony, breaking and entering, a fifth-degree felony, and illegal conveyance of prohibited items onto the grounds of a detention facility or institution, a felony of the third-degree. Judge Ballard set bond at $10,000 cash or surety and $50,000 OR.

• Aaron Workman, 29, of 512 State Route 373, Pedro, pleaded guilty to grand theft, a felony of the fourth-degree. In exchange for a guilty plea, the state nolled another count of fifth-degree breaking and entering. Judge Ballard sentenced him to four years CCS under ISP with 17 months reserved, and ordered him to complete 200 hours community service, complete inpatient treatment at Riverside Recovery Services and pay court costs.

• Dimitrie Thomas, 43, of 10394 Beechdale Street, Detroit, Michigan, pleaded not guilty to trafficking in drugs (Oxycodone), a second-degree felony, and aggravated possession of drugs (Oxycodone), also a second-degree felony. Judge Ballard set bond at $50,000 cash or surety and $100,000 OR.

• Julius Murphy, 28, of 711 Washington Street, Ironton, pleaded not guilty to trafficking in drugs (Oxycodone), a fourth-degree felony, and two counts of trafficking in heroin, one of the fourth-degree and the other of the fifth-degree. Judge Ballard set bond at $40,000 OR and ordered him to be placed on GPS monitoring.

• Joseph Stoneroad, 39, of 2018 S. Third Street, Ironton, pleaded not guilty to possession of a controlled substance (heroin), a fifth-degree felony. Judge Ballard continued bond at $1,500 from a lower court and set a $25,000 OR bond.
