SOUTH POINT — Spoiler alert!
Behind the three-hit pitcher of Garrett Carrico, Ironton ended the South Point Pointers hopes of winning the Ohio Valley Conference as the Fighting Tigers rallied for a 4-1 win on Monday.
The loss coupled with Rock Hill’s win over Portsmouth gives the Redmen the OVC title outright.
Carrico struck out six and walked five in going the distance.
“Carrico was in control the whole entire game. We had seniors come through at the plate again today and we were fortunate to have a big sixth inning,” said Ironton coach Travis Wylie.
“Salyers and Thomas are swinging the bat better and finding their wayon base which helps everyone out.”
Jonathon Henline pitched well in defeat. He gave up eight hits, struck out three and walked three.
South Point (13-3) snapped a scoreless tie with a run in the third.
Drew Smith walked, stole second and scored on a single by Travis Dillon.
Ironton broke through with a four-run sixth inning.
Gage Salyers led off with a single, Brycen Thomas was hit by a pitch and Carrico reached on an error as Salyers scored.
Tanner Bowles singled to left and Thomas scored the go-ahead run. Ethan Duncan walked and Joel Blankenship had a two-run single.
Blankenship was 2-3 with two RBI, Bowles 2-4 with an RBI and Salyers 2-4.
Ironton hosts Minford on Tuesday.
