Raymond Payne

Feb. 12, 1930– Nov. 10, 2019

Raymond L. “Doc” Payne, 89, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, Nov. 10, 2019, at Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Kentucky.

Mr. Payne was born Feb. 12, 1930, in Ironton, a son to the late A.T., Sr. and Catherine (Metz) Payne. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Nazlie “Naze” (Madlom) Payne, whom he married April 12, 1957.

Mr. Payne was a graduate of Ironton High School and served in the United States Army. Doc retired from AT&T Telephone Company after 36 years of service, where he worked in management as a district executive. He was a past president of Ironton Rotary, past city councilman and vice mayor of the City of Ironton. Doc was a member of Lawrence Lodge 198 F&A Masons and a Kentucky Colonel. He also was a faithful member of Beech Street Christian Church in Ashland, Kentucky.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six siblings, Adam Payne, A.T. Payne Jr., Harry Payne, Caroline Payne Kennedy, Kathleen Payne Robinette and Doris Payne Pyles.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by sister, Maude Bowen, of Ironton; several nieces and nephews; and dear close friends, Rod and Becky Depriest, and John and Mary Beth Boyd.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Beech Street Christian Church, 1672 Beech St., Ashland, Kentucky, with Dr. Rob O’Lynn officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Memorial Gardens. Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday, 12:30 p.m. until time of the service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, friends may send donations in Doc’s name to Beech Street Christian Church and/or Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Kentucky.

Norma Harbolt

March 9, 1935– Nov. 7, 2019

Norma Jean Harbolt, 84, of Tavares, Florida, passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2019, at Vitas at Edgewater Hospice, Mount Dora, Florida.

Mrs. Harbolt was born March 9, 1935 in Ironton, a daughter to the late James William and Della (Terry) Simmons. She is also survived by her husband, Robert E. Harbolt II, whom she married Dec. 24, 1955.

Mrs. Harbolt attended Ironton High School and Ohio University Southern campus. She was a retired Realtor for Susan McGinnis Realty Company. Norma was a member of First Church of the Nazarene, Ironton and Beta Sigma Phi.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by son, Jimmy Harbolt; seven brothers, William, Harold, James, Kenneth, Clarence, Stanley and Bill Simmons; four sisters, Anna Mae Hearon, Edna Ellis, Dorothy Carpenter and Maxine Voglesong.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by son, Robert E. (Melissa) Harbolt III, of Ironton; daughter, Kendra Harbolt, of Tavares, Florida; seven grandchildren, Jacqui Hall, Brandon (Krystil) Harbolt, B.J. (Bobbi) Harbolt, Scott (Allie) Harbolt, Gavin Harbolt, Rhett Ball and Nikki Harbolt; eight greatgrandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews

Funeral service will noon Friday at First Church of the Nazarene, 2318 S. 4th St., Ironton, with Rev. Rob Hale officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be Thursday, 6–8 p.m. at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton.

Robert Lee Plymale

Robert Lee Plymale, 93, of Proctorville, died Monday, Nov. 11, 2019, at The Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington, West Virginia.

He is survived by his wife of 75 years, Catherine Turina Plymale.

Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville with Rev. Anthony Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Dock’s Creek Cemetery, Kenova, West Virginia. No visitation will be held.

Amari Lavelle Gibbs

Amari Lavelle Gibbs, infant son of Stafan Lavelle Gibbs and Samantha Faye Thomas, died on Monday Nov. 11, 2019, at Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, West Virginia.

Pete Murphy

Nov. 30, 1934– Nov. 10, 2019

Lawrence Richard “Pete” Murphy, 84, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, Nov. 10, 2019 at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky.

He was born Nov. 30, 1934 in Portsmouth a son of the late William and Ollietha Burke Murphy.

Pete was a retired mathematician in the survey department of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and a 4-H advisor for over 30 years. He was a 1953 McDermott High School graduate, received his Bachelor of Science and Masters of Science in Mathematics from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. He attended the Johnstown Baptist Church.

He was also preceded in death by three brothers, William “Sonny,” Carl, and Johnny Murphy.

Pete is survived by his wife, Jane Stephenson Murphy, whom he married Dec. 12, 1964, in Rushtown; two daughters, Laura Jane Murphy, of Ironton and Amy (Jason) White, of Hilliard; special friend who was like his grandson, Levi Belcher; and two sisters, Irma Ehrmann, of Medway, and Carolyn “Cookie” Green, of Lucasville.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the McKinley Funeral Home in Lucasville with John “Pete” Horn officiating. Burial will follow in Rushtown Cemetery. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. till the funeral hour at the funeral home.

Roger Lee Markins

Nov. 4, 1967– Nov. 9, 2019

Roger Lee Markins, 52, of Ironton, passed Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019, at Adena Medical Center, Chillicothe. The Lawrence County native was born Nov. 4, 1967, the son of the late George W. Markins and Martha Mullins Markins.

Roger lived all of his life in the Lawrence County area. He attended Dawson-Bryant Schools in Coal Grove.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George Markins.

He is survived by sister and brother-in-law; Mary and Larry Williams, of Ironton; sister and brother-in-law; Goldie and James Pierson, of Ironton; sister; Loretta Williams, of Ironton; sister; Martha Sexton, of Coal Grove; sister and brother-in-law; Lynn and Burl Bunker, of Pedro; sister and brother-in-law; Debra and Larry Jenkins, of Ironton; brother; Larry Markins, of Ironton; sister; Matilda Kerns, of Portsmouth; brother; Jerry Markins, of Pedro; sister; Amie Abston, of Lebanon; sister; Christina Markins, of Delaware; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton with Rev. Jeff Cremeans officiating. Burial will follow in Leatherwood Cemetery and visitation will be Thursday from noon until the time of the service at the funeral home.

John Royster

Dec. 31, 1953– Nov. 11, 2019

John Royster, 65, of Franklin Furnace, passed away Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 at Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Kentucky. Mr. Royster was born Dec. 31, 1953, in Ironton, a son to the late Stanley and Helen Louise (Howard) Royster.

Mr. Royster was a 1972 graduate of Green High School and was a retired maintenance supervisor for OSCO in Portsmouth. John was a former Lawrence County deputy sheriff. He was an avid arrow head hunter and authenticator. He loved the great outdoors and enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a member of Ohio Furnace Enterprise Baptist Church.

He is survived by two sons, Josh (Lori) Royster, of Catlettsburg, Kentucky, and Robby (Nikki Matney) Royster, of Franklin Furnace; a daughter, Alaina Royster; two sisters, Judy (Charles) Wurts and Rita Mayhew of Franklin Furnace; two stepchildren, Tracey and Aimee Schweickart, of Ironton; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews who will miss him.

Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home, 1004 S. Seventh St., Ironton, with Pastor Matt Mayhew officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Garden and visitation will be Friday, 11 a.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.
